Orthopantomogram

The Orthopantomogram (OPG), also known as a panoramic radiograph, is a dental X-ray that captures a complete view of your mouth, teeth, and jaw in a single image. This includes both the upper and lower jaws, the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), and all teeth. It is a crucial diagnostic tool used by dentists and oral surgeons for a variety of purposes.

An OPG is helpful for evaluating wisdom teeth, identifying dental infections, assessing jaw alignment, diagnosing temporomandibular joint disorders, planning implant surgeries, and more. The wide-angle view provided by an OPG allows your dental professional to gain a comprehensive perspective on your oral health, which is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Specific Instructions: Preparation for an OPG is simple and easy. Here are some important things to keep in mind:

  • Fasting is not required before an OPG; you can eat and drink as usual on the day of the test.
  • If you are pregnant or suspect you may be, inform your doctor beforehand. Although the radiation exposure during an OPG is low, it’s important to minimize any risk to a developing fetus.
  • On the day of the exam, remove all facial jewelry, including earrings, nose rings, and piercings in the mouth or lips. You may also be asked to remove dentures, if applicable.
  • Allergies generally don’t interfere with an OPG, but let your doctor know if you've had any previous adverse reactions to X-ray contrast materials.
